Science Newsie Catchup for November, 2014

Hey y’all, let me tell ya, November was one craaaa-haaaaa-haaaazy month, and so I apologize, but some things on my end fell by the wayside, but I’m here now to try and make up for that with one of the best parts of the Science Behind the Sci-Fi newsletters, the sciencey stuff! 🙂 The holidays should be a little brighter with some spacey goodness, so here goes!!

  • Apollo’s Younger Brother to Debut This Week: The Orion manned space probe — the first long-range manned space probe since the Apollo missions over forty years ago — is set to make its debut test flight this week, which will HOPEFULLY usher in a new era of space exploration should it be successful. Here’s to hoping!
  • Gaining InSight into Mars: NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratories have begun the final assembly and testing of their next generation Mars rover, InSight. As a huge fan of the rover program, I am giddy to see how this one performs.
  • It’s a Liquid! It’s a Gas! It’s Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: Scientists recently theorized that, as humans live on water, aliens could live on “supercritical” carbon dioxide, which can exist as both a liquid and a gas at the same time! CRAZY!
  • Giving Thanks from Orbit: Of the astronauts on the International Space Station, two American and one Italian took last Thursday off to celebrate Thanksgiving, and shared a cute little video with us as well!

That’s it for now folks, hope that keeps y’all going until next time. Have a great week! 🙂

Science Behind the Sci-Fi Newsletter: September 2014

I: Introduction

Hey there folks, welcome to an all-new Science Behind the Sci-Fi Newsletter covering September, 2014! September has been an interesting month as we’ve had a bit of crossover with our sister company, Broken Crayon Games. Read on to find out more!

II: Science Behind the Sci-Fi

For this month’s panel, we did something a little different. Over at Broken Crayon, we’ve launched a Kickstarter campaign for an exciting new Dinosaur simulation called Dinosaur Island. In Dinosaur Island, you get to control individual dinosaurs or packs of dinos in a realistically modeled, procedurally generated environment. You must help the dinosaurs survive through a combination of proper feeding and dealing with the environment around you, including predators!

In this month’s panel, we spoke to Dr. Ezra Sidran (the creator of Dinosaur Island), Dr. Karen Chin (Curator of Paleontology at University of Colorado) and Dr. Jordan Mallon (Research Scientist at the Canadian Museum of Nature) for a spirited discussion about the game and the dinosaurs it models. If you love dinosaurs — and who doesn’t, really? — check it out!

Hello my friends, and say hello to our August company newsletter!! August is already underway, and stuff has already happened! In July we had an excellent first Science Behind the Sci-Fi panel, and we had a new one just the other day, both of which will be linked below. We also have an upcoming Kickstarter campaign we’d love your help with, so without further adieu, let’s dive in!

Broken Crayon had their first Summer Sale this past month! I hope everyone was able to get their own copies of Quibbles, Wizardous and more at some fantastic prices. We’ve also seen some random sales pop up, so keep an eye out on our Facebook, Twitter and Google+ pages for updates on new sales and other interesting tidbits.

Besides that, we have a bit of big news…

III. Upcoming Items

Broken Crayon will be launching our first Kickstarter campaign ever in September, and we could really use your help to make it the best campaign it can be! The game is called Dinosaur Island, and it’s a dinosaur simulator made by award-winning game designer Ezra Sidran, who in the 80s and 90s delighted fans with his award-winning Designasaurus series of games.

Now, the Kickstarter campaign launched September first, but we could use your help before then. Our campaign is currently in a draft mode, and we’re accepting feedback on how we can make it as engaging and entertaining as possible. We therefore invite you to head over to Kickstarter and give us your honest, constructive feedback on how well the campaign page is laid out, how effective are the videos or writing, and so on. With your help, we can not only successfully fund this game, but get it into the hands of teachers and students at schools in need as well!

That’s it for this month’s newsletter folks! Thanks for reading, and have an amazing day/week/month!
